Growing great food in Rochester, New York

Quantities are still limited due to persistent drought conditions on our farm, but we’re harvesting some amazing tomatoes and a few peppers!

Hundreds of tomato plants in many varieties are doing beautifully and starting to ripen. One of our staff was presented the honorary first cherry tomato yesterday, and his eyes widened when he popped it into his mouth!

We’re seeing broccoli heads sizing up in the field! We stole a sneak peek and it is absolutely delicious! The stem is actually sweet, a bit like corn. We can’t wait for the whole crop to size up in a week or so for shares!

Lots of tasty pea shoots on the way!

Last night I served the first BBG supper of the season to my family, in anticipation of today’s first CSA delivery of the year! Sure, we do some snacking in the field, but today I grabbed my basket and scissors and harvested enough for an 8-person meal. I admit, I didn’t actually think that a greens + tofu stir fry would be a huge hit, even with our favorite tofu, Rochester’s own SoyBoy.

I was very surprised to see my boys literally shoveling the food into their mouths. And really jazzed when Sasha, who is three and notoriously fussy at meals, cleaned his bowl out completely and was the first or second one finished.

And I agree with his demonstration: the greens tasted great! I had three bowls full.

Artichokes are looking absolutely great.

Transplanting several hundred beets on a gorgeous afternoon.

Beautiful food.

A dry April, then wet and snowy! Crops in the field are cold-hardy and doing fine except for some puddles. James visited puddly spots with our broadfork and got some improvement.

A few of the thousands of strawberry plants we’re growing this year.
